Is it possible that the driver will voluntarily stop driving?

Answer: Although most drivers with dementia will only stop driving when forced to, some drivers with dementia stop on their own – they may no longer feel comfortable behind the wheel or agree to stop based on informal conversations with their family, friends, police, clergyman etc.  Drivers can voluntarily surrender their license to the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). To receive a refund, individuals can mail their license and a completed refund application to the Refund Section of the RMV. The refund could then be used towards the fee for an Identification Card to use in place of the license. For more information and the Refund Section’s mailing addresses click here.
